Located in the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands the Railway Museum (in Dutch: Spoorwegmuseum) might seem like an unlikely photography location. Until you arrive up front that is.

Established in 1927, the museum which receives around 355,000 visitors a year, has been based in its current location – the former Maliebaan station – since 1954.

It isn’t so much the trains from all ages, the exhibitions or even the railway equipment that makes a trip to the Spoorwegmuseum worth it – although they are all impressive. No, what makes the Railway Museum extra worthwhile is the station itself.

The building has been remodeled to look like how it did in the 19th century and that means you have the Station Hall, Freight Hall, Dining Room, Waiting Rooms (1st, 2nd and 3rd class) and a Royal Waiting Room all available for you and your camera.

Tip: Inside the museum is fairly dark, so you will need a higher ISO, wide aperture, and/or a tripod to get decent shots.

For more information including prices, opening times and directions, visit the Spoorwegmuseum website.
